My friend told me he couldn't meet up as planned because there was a problem with his car. I prayed about it and even suggested my friend did the same but the verdict was that it would take a few days to have it sorted. At first I was disappointed because I was looking forward to seeing him, then I became still and asked within. The answer I received was "It's OK, everything is working out perfectly." If everything is working perfectly then not meeting up on that day must be in perfect accordance with who I am being.
Later on my way home earlier than usual, I waited and waited but no bus arrived. That's very unusual for it to take this long. What's going on? Actually, what's going on with me? Is it because I am not in harmony with who I am? That can't be; I know everything is working out perfectly. Although I hadn't experienced that moment before, I knew I'd already experienced it in Spirit. I had a feeling that a very ostentatious looking red car was going to drive right by. Within moments the very same car went by overtaking the ones in the traffic. Aha, I'm meant to be here after all.
A woman I knew joined me at the bus stop. We chatted for a while then her bus arrived. After I had been waiting for half an hour (there was a clock close by), my bus arrived, but it was packed full. I decided I was going to get on anyway. A man who had just appeared at the bus stop told me he'd seen another bus behind, which was probably empty, and suggested that I wait for it. I let the packed bus go.
After waiting and waiting and no bus appeared, my friend realised that the one he'd seen behind had broken down. Now it made perfect sense why the previous bus had been so full, it had picked up the other passengers from the broken down bus. I playfully told off my friend for making me miss my other bus.
My friend said he was off to work, but he still had lots of time to get there. He said he didn't live that far away but sometimes it takes over an hour by bus when he's easily cycled it in fifteen minutes. We chatted about different shifts people work. He said he knew people who worked a cycle of 12 hours a day for 7 days and had 7 days off. He said it was fine if you're single but if you're married it's not fair on your partner or family. I said I used to work for the London Fire Brigade Personnel Department where we recruited firefighters, and the firefighters worked a cycle of 4 days of 12 hours shifts, and then had 4 days off.
"Yeah, I have a friend who was a firefighter but retired early. He used to have other jobs on the go because of his time off."
"I'm not surprised."
"It's a really good job. I always wanted to be a firefighter but I'm scared of heights," he said.
"It's pretty tricky to be a firefighter if you're scared of heights," I chuckled. "I used to have a fear of shops."
"Shops?"
"Yes, I would feel sick to my stomach when I went into a shop, any shop, and felt like going to the toilet."
"How old were you?"
"From my late teens and my twenties. I eventually got that fear sorted out."
"It just shows that we are not all perfect," he said. "I just wish my girlfriend would realise that."
"Why? Is she trying to change you?"
"No, it's not that, it's just that she's scared. I reckon something happened to her in the past. I keep telling her time will heal and you can't let the past get to you but she won't listen."
"Oh, that's a shame," I said. "How long have you been together?"
"Three months."
"Do you like her?"
"Yeah, I ain't felt like this for anyone in forty years." He suddenly looked bashful and looked away.
"I know exactly what you mean. I met someone recently and it's the first time I've felt this strongly for anyone in my forty years."
I gave him a brief history about how I met my friend and how things were currently between us.
"It really hurts when you feel so strongly for someone and can't do anything."
"I know. It will work out you know. Things always work out for the best," I said "Hey, for all you know, we were meant to meet up this evening to chat. Maybe, that's why our bus got delayed."
"It must be fate!" he chuckled."
"I guess so."
My friend told me about his recent holidays at a friend's villa in Egypt. He said I would like Egypt. He didn't care much for Cairo, which he said is about half the size of London with twice the population.
Our bus finally arrived. According to the clock, I had been waiting for an hour. If I had walked, it would have taken me around 45 minutes.
On the bus, my friend and I sat together. He continued to share places he'd been to in the Mediterranean and recommended various islands I would like. He said he's even worked in a bar in Spain but the British and the Irish community didn't get on too well and he got sick of it. I told him about my trip to Australia. We soon arrived at his stop. He told me his name was Ian. We shook hands and said goodbye.
It's amazing the wonderful guises that Love appears in. As my friend, Love appeared as a white, skinhead guy, with a working-class accent. Go beyond the appearances and we realise we both want to love and be loved.
Sometimes, even when there are delays or when cars break down, everything is working out perfectly. Why? Because love is all there is.
