Someone finds salvation in everyone, another only painAs the bus I was in was approaching the next stop, where I intended to connect to my next bus, I saw the bus I wanted was in front of us. I decided to stay on the bus I was in and let my bus follow the one in front. I figured that somewhere down the line, my bus would overtake the one in front and I'll be able to catch it further down. As soon as I had the thought, the bus in front sped away and we were caught in a traffic jam. We eventually caught up with the bus at another stop. As soon as my bus attempted to overtake it, it sped off again. Our "catch me if you can" game continued for a few minutes with our bus following close behind but never able to overtake the one in front.
Someone tries to hide himself, down inside himself he prays
Someone swears its true love until the end of time, another runs away
Separate or united, healthy or insane
And to be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do Be Yourself, Audioslave
Our game reminded me of being true to myself. By myself I mean the Me that is infinite wisdom, joy, creativity, love, light and uniquely me. Being true to myself is the equivalent of steering a car or any vehicle. The driver is there to keep the vehicle in a straight line. When the car veers to the left or right, the driver steers it back to the middle.
Every moment of every day is an opportunity for me to be myself. The moment I feel myself veering to the left or right, I feel sudden anxieties and the next thing you know I'm worrying about the future or the past. I could stay to the left or right for endless moments and get lost or I could steer myself right back in the middle and keep on the path that is uniquely me. I've noticed that when I am being myself, I am in perfect harmony with everything around me. It's like I'm experiencing a reality where there is only me in different guises.
I could see that by wanting the bus I was in to overtake the one in front I was veering off the beaten track. I decided it was time to stop being concerned about the bus in front, and give no thought to the one behind. I was happy to simply enjoy the journey and be in the moment. The bus in front sped away and we never caught up with it again.
Later on down the road I got off and waited for another bus. At that bus stop there are three different routes and only one was suitable. The next bus to arrive was the one I wanted.
When I checked my email, I noticed one from a friend called "Relax, Fly, Be Free." She said for some reason I'd been in thought for the last two weeks and had decided to send me an article I'd written. Knowing how much I love StarTrek, she'd also attached the Star Trek Voyager - Theme tune. I re-read the piece and was drawn to the following:
I've had to learn the hard way that trying to convert others to my way of seeing doesn't work at all. When I'm trying to fix or change someone, I'm giving out the signal that I'm unhappy with myself; for the other I'm trying to change/fix is no other than another version of myself experiencing a different reality. So I find it best to let others be and simply be myself.I could see that my friend had picked up on when I've been careering off the road.
[...]
So instead of trying to convert someone to my way, to paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi, I would rather be the change I want to see in the world. Then the world shape-shifts into who I am being. I Would Rather Be Myself Than Convert Others
It's always the same old theme tune: Be Yourself, Be Yourself, Be Yourself. In other words, focus on the middle path. Funny how the Universe sent me a copy of my own article to remind me. Thank you, dear friend, for the timely reminder. :-)
Be yourself and the world changes accordingly.
